Support map preloading for offline use

Add a way to preload maps for a state, region, or country, so we'll still have maps if we lose internet connection out in the middle of nowhere, or for those of us who have limited (or no) data plans.

Waze can only be a big player on the market, if it offers some offline capabilities. Average mobile internet user (with 2-4Gb data plan) can handle online traffic data and alerts, but not the downloading of whole map areas.
Until that people will only use it occasionally, when there is some actual problem on the road; not as a all time navigation.

Even Google offers a way to preload maps.

switch to here map. free offline map, free APP.

They won't build it because Google is aligned with the interests of cell phone plan providers and they make money selling you data. Period. If Waze allowed you to download the maps and store them on the device you would use 1/100th the data that it does now.

Online, it's only usable on the major cities. In rural areas or even in minor cities I often can't use Waze without this "offline mode".

I just downloaded this to my Galaxy S5 and it looks good but for sure there is a need to have off line maps. Like others have mentioned I've been out in the country and lost cell connectivity and it would suck to be out in the middle of no where and have the GPS quit. Fortunately I also have NavFree which will run purely of GPS but I'd rather not have to switch apps in the middle of driving somewhere. Does anyone have real numbers on how much data Waze uses ?

Extremelly necessary. Do to poor conection in some places.

Yes offline maps when you are on journay in another country would be great. Then you don't need expensive roming.

Quando isto for feito, cessarão inúmeras intervenções e aborrecimentos.

Agreed! Offline maps are very handy to have in a GPA applications. I live in Sweden, anyone who lives in Sweden knows that you don't have to drive far to enter a Forrest with limited connection to the internet. I do understand that waze is a community app and wants to use internet all the time because of that, but we should at least be able to download maps. I would like to have a settings there I can download maps but still connected to internet for small things like sending your trip statuses to friends. I don't see the point in forcing to have a on-the-fly downloaded map.

i need offline maps as well. I am half year in panama and here you do not have signal on all places.

      • PhilPhil commented  ·

Yes to offline maps when Internet signal poor (switching back to 'live' maps when signal becomes available) but also need the ability to make reports with poor signal. It's very frustrating sitting in traffic and not being able to warn other Waze users about it. Far better would be to allow the report, and for that report to be sent as soon as enough signal becomes available.

it would be very useful when i am traveling abord or in forest

Waze is quite simply one of the best navigation apps out there. The only downfall is a lack of off line navigation. Once your cell loses coverage it no longer works. Waze... You would have an unbeatable product if you would only listen to your customer (currently 5000± users want this feature more than any other) and have an off line option. As it is I use Co-pilot for off line nav.

I would be willing to pay a small subscription to have the maps offline as this would be useful all round by looking the comments.

This is not even under review? We should be able to load maps to use the app offline. This would be so useful when people travel abroad and usually do not have Internet connection.

      • MGODLEWMGODLEW commented  ·

Waze will likely NEVER support FULL offline use. The app is a Social GPS app, it only works when people are connected to Waze server to share road information. Hence Social GPS. Preloading route data while on a wifi connection might be more realistic though. SEE: http://goo.gl/GAW404 for status on the request

Ultimately i do not want to fight with my gps. That's the bottom line. If a gps doesn't do what I want, I will immediately let go of it and move onto something else. i refuse to spend hours on a forum discussing why i hate it.
