As the original author intimated, this feature would be particularly useful on motorways when assessing how long the queue is up to an incident. Google Maps has a scale indicator; I wouldn't have thought it was a tricky thing to add on Waze. I have long wanted this and had finally decided it was worth the effort to raise the request myself when I found this post. I can't believe it's been out there so long and still not acted upon. PLEASE add it. :-)
