The phone screen especially when positioned higher up compared to the car play screen is far better. The car play screen means you have to move your head to see the satnav and not just your eyes like with a phone. While it's smaller it manages the space a lot better. Every time I get a taxi the drivers all have the routes map on their phone screen. I find the various popups on Waze do not display well on the car play screen and can actually block you from seeing your navigation at times. I find Waze to be the best satnav app but this is a bad integration with with car play. The lack of flexibility may push me to reconsider my satnav app. The fact this issue was flagged almost 5 years ago and nothing has changed will likely mean i do that. What a shame...
