    I tried disabling the phone location while using Waze and it followed perfectly the route so I think it used the car's GPS antenna. But, after around 30 minutes the app asked me for GPS permission causing the navigation interruption. So, I think that it can be possible and it's something related to the Android permission handling when some events occur
