    I almost always drive with the "alerts only" sound option, but one thing it doesn't alert you to, is a route change.  If the full sound is on, you'll hear a notification sound letting you know it's rerouting (like if you didn't turn where it told you to).  But on "alert only" mode, there's no sound if it reroutes you BEFORE you get to the detour. A notification sound would help alert you that something has changed after your initial look.
