Good input and I had the same idea. I have started to work on similar device which should not only use an external GPS / GNSS Chipset for positioning, but also be charger for the phone. If you are interested, please send me a mail. I`m currently collecting information, how well it would be received by the users to see if we can make a full business case out of it and go to production within this year.

Great news! The Waze Beacons Program is in the works and constantly expanding.
The Waze Beacons Program is the first scalable, affordable solution in the world to power navigation in tunnels. Currently available in select tunnels throughout Pittsburgh, Haifa, Israel, Paris and Rio de Janeiro – seamless navigation is available to Wazers underground simply by turning on Bluetooth functionality.

Hi all. To give you some background on DR. The difficulty lays still in the Algorithms to correctly read out the sensors and convert it into a correct GPS data stream. The only and best option is to connect it to the car directly, either to the sensors or to the CAN-Bus of the car (which is even more difficult as every car manufacturer has its own flavor of CAN-Bus). But that is not possible for 99,999 % of the Userbase. So waze's only option would be to clamp the car to the street it is driving on and predict the position with the latest speed. Don't know how easy it would be for Waze to integrate that. But generally a good idea.
