I’d like to request a critical improvement to Waze’s in-car (CarPlay) reporting functionality.
The Problem:
While driving in NYC during UN week, the FDR was completely shut down. Waze kept trying to reroute me back onto the FDR because it did not know the closure was in place. I tried to report the closure, but there was no “Road Closed” option available in CarPlay. Instead, I had to dangerously unplug my phone, unlock it, and manually enter the closure report - something no driver should have to do while in motion.
Currently, CarPlay allows drivers to report many other things (construction, lane blocked, police, etc.), but NOT a road closure. This is a major gap: road closures are arguably more urgent than most other reportable events, since they affect all drivers and can waste huge amounts of time if left unreported.
Why This Matters:
-Safety risk: Drivers may be tempted to interact with their phones while driving to submit a closure report.
-Navigation accuracy: Without closure reports, Waze will continue to direct users onto roads that are impassable, creating frustration and inefficiency.
-Consistency: Most other report types are available in CarPlay - road closures should be too.
Proposed Solution:
Add “Road Closed” as a reporting option within CarPlay (and Android Auto). This should be accessible at the same tap depth as the other existing report types, ensuring safe, quick reporting from the wheel.
Impact:
-Reduces unsafe driver behavior
-Improves route accuracy in real time for the entire community
-Aligns reporting UI with the core mission of Waze: getting people where they need to go as quickly and safely as possible
