Permanent Hazard Cameras: Electronic Toll Collection
Many locations are now using electronic toll collection systems that take a photo of a user’s license plate, then send the user either a bill or a violation/penalty notice by mail. Since this is relatively new tech, a common concern over many of these applications is that they could be easy to miss, thus causing confusion over an “invisible toll” even if clearly signed. Additionally, some of these toll cameras also act as lane-use and HOV lane cameras in the case of express and HOT lanes. In some jurisdictions, they even act as speed cameras.
Since PHs show up on the route preview, adding “Toll Camera” to the permanent hazards cameras list would greatly improve the user experience by making it clear where and how a toll is collected on specific segments, whether it be cash/credit, or toll-by-plate/pass only.
For a physical toll booth where users must stop or significantly slow down, the existing toll booth permanent hazard should still be used instead of the camera, even if there exists a toll camera at the booth.
