Option 2 would be if no significant movement is detected for x minutes then the app auto closes. It kills the battery. The user (me) may not be aware Waze is still active. One commenter mentioned hitting a Pineapple Icon to activate this feature but darn if I can find it. Should be under settings. iPhone.

I get the opposite. The longer the drive, the longer over the estimated time the drive takes (600 miles or more). I am factoring in rest stops. I suspect Waze is looking at traffic speed regardless of the posted speed limits. Fine if below the posted, but quite often I see traffic traveling 15 to 20 mph above the posted speed. Not everyone but a significant number of speeders.
Waze needs 2 speeds listed. One is with the flow, the other is driving at the posted limit taking into account slow traffic. The actual drive time is between.
