Instead of "turn left in X feet", how about just saying something more like "take the next left"
Instead of focusing directions on distance when approaching a turn, treat the turns more like your roundabout directions. It's more natural to give directions such as: "take the next right" or "go left at the light" rather than "turn in 500 feet" or go right on Main Street (especially if the street sign isn't easiy to see).

I see a potential problem with this: if not all roads are mapped. Or if there is a very short distance between mapped roads / exit ramps

When can we expect some information on this?
