I would like to suggest a new Waze safety feature that would allow cyclists and runners who use roads shared with motor vehicles to make their presence visible to nearby drivers in real time.

Cyclists and runners could activate a dedicated “Cyclist” or “Runner” safety mode in the Waze app. While this mode is active, Waze would anonymously share their approximate real-time location with approaching drivers. Drivers could then receive an audio warning such as:

“Caution: cyclist ahead.”
“Caution: runner on the road ahead.”

The warning should be given early enough for the driver to slow down and pass safely. The runner or cyclist would not need to interact with the app while moving—the mode could remain active until manually stopped or automatically end when the activity is completed. To protect privacy, their identity and full route would not be displayed.

Real-life example
Almost every morning, while driving to work, I encounter a runner using the same road as cars and trucks. When there are trucks in front of me, they often block my view, and I may only see the runner at the last moment. This creates a dangerous situation for the runner, for me, and for other drivers.

If the runner could activate Waze before starting, approaching drivers could receive an early audio warning and have enough time to reduce their speed and leave a safe passing distance.

Partnerships with running clubs, cycling communities, sports events, and road-safety organizations could help promote it.

This feature could extend Waze’s community-based safety approach beyond drivers and help protect all road users.
