Unit type "Local"
On the unit selection option, besides Km, and Mile, add "Localized" which will show Miles in the US and KMs in, well , roughly everywhere else...

Google maps already has this, it is a third unit option called automatic and is very useful for those travelling back and forth between the US and its neighbors or the UK and its neighbors.
