With bigger vehicles it is often true that lots of stopping and starting causes poor fuel consumption. The shortest route might therefore be more costly to take than a longer route, should the shorter one have a lot of stops and starts in it.
Sometimes a 5 minute longer trip but with a saving on fuel cost makes lots of sense, especially if you start to multiply the daily cost saving by 20 or so working days.
If a user of Waze has for example three fields to completed – ave open road fuel consumption, ave open and city road consumption, as well as ave city only consumption – then you can create algorithms to predict which route will be the more fuel efficient.
The user can then decide if a shorter route with a higher fuel cost is better on the day or a longer one with a cost saving would be preferred.
So similar to “alternative routes” you can add “most fuel efficient route according to your vehicle’s ave”. Obviously there are too many vehicles and different driving styles to expect of Waze to prepopulate on published manufactures figures. So each users must just add his own vehicles 3 sets of figures once (or once for every vehicle he drives with). After that Waze applies the algorithm in line with the users own entries.
So the algorithm for the three ave would take into account
1 - minimal stop and go
2 – a few stop and go
3 – a lot of stop and go -

If this shortest route option is not brought back, ideal for 'green laning' by 4x4 drivers who are more intersted in quirky routes than speed, then I shall have to find another app, or reluctantly just use the phone default which comes up with google mapping when an address link is given on a phone. The latter saved retyping but it used to be worth it. I used to write and edit the map and comments and have made many additional edits that being local to me I was far more familiar to. You have spoilt the fun of driving 4x4 by changing the Waze community app. Its now no longer better than any other standard get there fast map.

One of the updates seems to have removed the option to choose shortest route instead of fastest route. There are times I would rather take the country roads instead of staying on the interstate - ESPECIALLY when the interstate is showing extensive delays. Many times how when I check routes to find another way it doesn't offer any other option. But I check my Garmin that is in my car and it shows options. I like Waze but it seems that the functionality I liked is going away, including warnings and rerouting for construction or traffic issues. Today I encountered both and Waze did not reroute or even acknowledge the slowdowns.

Waze navigation has always been horrible, in my opinion. I like the Road Hazard/Police etc. reporting functionality, but the mapping is not ideal by any means. Google Maps navigation is perfect...awesome...never a problem. I vote that Waze offer Google Maps navigation within their settings as an option!! That would make it the ideal navigation app!!

Waze is crap now...
Your problems seems to concern US only...But in EU Waze is disaster..
Wanna Example?
Trip POLAND-CROATIA
My usual route is: POLAND->SLOVAKIA->HUNGARY->CROATIA = 730KM
WAZE tells me to go: POLAND->CHECH REPUBLIC->AUSTRIA->SLOVENIA = 900KMand the difference is not only a distance... I have to pay for a highway toll card in every of these countries..So maybe I will save 30mins but I will pay more for GAS and many more for HIGHWAYS...it is idiotic and crappy idea.
Please do something about this.

Please add shortest route feature. The fastest is sometimes the longest route. I'd rather have the short one. Saves time AND GAS!!!!

Please let us, users, decide if shortest or fastest

I think user can choose
- optimal (like present)
- short (without real-time statistics)
- fast (only real-time statistics) -

I propose to leave only one alternate (shortest) route, other than the main (fastest) route, which would not count the statistics on the segments.

Yes for electric car. Pleas ADD function.

I don't understand why you would remove basic routing functionality. As an electric vehicle driver I very much prefer a shorter route in general. I got bit again today by the lack of this functionality when Waze took me on a route at least 10 miles longer on the highway, which ended up having an accident and traffic jam anyway, so it was longer AND slower. It required me to unnecessarily charge longer to make my destination.
When the "Electric" vehicle type option is selected, please prefer shorter routes as any small change in travel time is more than made up with faster charging time.

My route to work can be either 15 miles, 23 miles or 26 miles. Waze only shows me the two longer ones instead of the usual three, even though the shortest route is only a minute longer than the 23 mile route and usually 3-4 minutes faster than the 26 mile trip. Give me the option to select the shortest route.

Because Waze chose the fastest route my EV car needs to charge to reach the endpoint. This costs me a lot more time then the saved minutes due to traffic on the much shorter route. Please bring back shortest route option.
