Dash cam
Add dash cam features in background, auto record when car is moving, just enable feature and everything runs in background. Similar to app called witness. Record 10 segments, 6min each. Store date, time and GPS. Thought of this after learning that every car in Russia has a dash cam (all those meteor recordings).
Great thinking! We’ll share with the team; they’re always interested in new feature ideas.

In addition to this idea, I would suggest a sort of picture in picture feature. With my Honda Civic, the gap in the dashboard right in front of the right information screen is just the right size to hole my iPhone 6s Plus. It obscures that screen, of course, but the camera looks directly at it. That information could be included in the Waze app via the camera. This could be done via the same feature I'm replying to, but need not be a recording (just a pass-through). User should be able to, with a tap or voice command, toggle the view on or off.

Record video and sensor data from device to help investigate accidents save the user from having 2 devices , and use all the smart phone information to allow in depth analysis of what led to an accident , and potentially call emergency help like police or first aid in case app detects and accident.

I agree, it makes a lot sense considering the hardware is already in place. It has a ton of use. Check YouTube for dashcam videos and you will get an idea of how many situations that are caught on camera thanks to dashcams.

I'd love for Waze to incorporate a Dash Cam. I've used the Witness app, but I can't use it and navigation at the same time. Background dash cam recording (video loop) while using Waze would be the ultimate! Unfortunately in my area, a GPS-enable, speed tracking dash cam is a must due to the crooked cops who lie about a person's speed in order to meet their monthly ticket quotas. So for me, the dash cam is probably the more vital of the two, but to me, there shouldn't be any particular reason why Waze couldn't use the iPhone's camera as a dash cam in the background. Come on, Waze!

This would be a great idea! I also thought about it. Loop recording is why I use 2 phones in the car. One for Waze and one for loop recording dash cam, which cannot run in background due to Apple limitations. Maybe the hind cmare dash cam option could be an in app purchase. Lots would buy it!!!

I agree. Most people seem to mount their phones where it could be utilized for a rolling x amount of footage. If you need monies in the R&D I bet a surcharge to go premium for a dollar or two would be well worth it to users.

The police reporting was controversial when Waze originally released.
Instead, allow this DVR idea to make our roads safer by crowdsourcing a 'report reckless driving' option. Wikipedia lists 32,716 automobile deaths in 2013 alone.
Waze can market a simple clip to attach a smartphone to the side of the rearview mirror. The camera can continually record. As a dangerous driver is observed, a user can tap a large target in the center of the smartphone to send the clip to the local authorities determined by GPS.

Dash cam functionality is needed. Us Waze users leave app on when driving so would be of added benefit for Dash Cam function. "Sygic" Nav app already does this for both iOS and Android, I'm using that app instead of Waze because of that feature. Please Waze; Dash Cam feature! Vote now people.

Can you make a way while the app is open to enable the front facing camera to act as a mobile DVR and record for a selected length of time before it records over itself? Basically, it would act as a drive camera. I as the user would be able to select a window of 5,10,30,60 mintues of recording time while the app is open and the phone is in the front window being used for nav. Once the camera uses up the selected amount of time, it would then start recording over the old video and create a loop.

This would be a great OPTION. Certain areas are known for accidents. A great idea to protect yourself. How about a way to also download data regarding speed etc. in case of accident.

I was thinking about a video loop, whose length can be selected by the user, with a button to save or upload the video loop contents when something interesting happens. Additionally, to protect potential crash footage, the video loop would be saved after a user specified amount of time elapsed with no detectable vehicle motion. Obviously, users should be able to turn the dash cam off and on.
I can't tell you how many times I wished I had footage of "that idiot" to send to the police.

Some other apps have a dash cam and maps but the maps are not as good as waze so if waze adds a camera it would be the perfect driving app

I am trying to run both Waze and DRV. I can start up DRV and it runs fine in the background until I open up Waze. Within a few seconds DRV stops recording telling me: Low memory, video stopped recording. Any suggestions? I am using a Motorola Droid Razor XT907.

It could be very useful but not for hours of recording. only the last 5/10 minutes could be enough.

I agree this would save us from buying separate black box, which would record last 15min of driving and by crash or by user pressing the button VIDEO SAVE, would save the last 15min of video to the phone....
