Maybe the developers have been asked or have done this as they want us to move to another application and are slowly dropping development of this product.
Please, hide "my waze" and "Where to" bar when im driving and no destination is set. These are destroying the Apps usability, maybe time to look for a better application, such a shame.

I swear these people are doing it on purpose. I've upgraded my phone and on the new device with the latest version the search bar is hiding after a while in portrait mode but not on landscape mode. Is this some kind of joke or mockery? And even though my new screen is larger, the bars are proportionately bigger, wtf should I do with giant grey bars on my screen?!

The search bar no longer hides automatically even after sometime when driving without navigation...it's now permanently stuck on the screen... what happened?

The search bar no long hides even in roaming mode now...tried a few devices yields the same results...WHAT HAPPENED?
Please allow us to have the option to hide both the bars. It permanently occupied more than half of my screen in landscape mode... Most of thr time we don't search, but to know which road have hea y traffic...

It doesn't hide, sometimes i catch a glimpse of it hiding but it comes back in the same second it goes away and my commute is 40 minutes, that is more than enough time..

A year later and the Waze admins haven't even bothered to respond, and this issue is far older than that even. There is similar radio-silence on the issue of the worthless carpool button. Anyone remember when Waze used actual icons in the corners of the screen for features rather than taking up huge amounts of space for things that nobody wants? If you were quick you could actually see if that street you just drove past was the one you were looking for.
And for the Waze developers... What could have possibly made you think that everyone needs to set a destination every time they use your app? Perhaps you believe that I am simply too stupid to know how to drive between work and home without dictated commands guiding me?
Fortunately I have a saved copy of the 4.78.0.2 apk, before all this nonsense with the search bar and carpooling started. I thought I would install the latest version on my new phone, but now I know better. I'm reverting back to a usable version until you can provide something that your users can actually use.

I wonder why people leave full comments but don't take the time to actually vote, so the developers consider this feature...

That is NOT TRUE! Search bar never hides. PLEASE give us the option to hide it and give us our screen real estate back!!!

I agree, please let me decide if I want to have an extra search bar. And do not cover the screen. With it. Waze is an awesome app but it makes me think because Google owns it they are deliberately annoy us so we use google maps instead and then they can say, well people are not using it anymore and shut it down. I love Google but don't agree with destroying something that was great. Self sabotage to simplify.

HOW MUCH is "some time"? Is it some a random interval? Probably no!
How about you take "some time" and make it the default. Expose that value to be editable by the user.
Or...
add a MANUAL toggle
where it shows on the map with a tap. Like the other things that are set up that way.
