When launching Waze app during dark times, have app utilize light sensor to start in night mode.
App starts up in day mode during dark hours and doesn't switch until route is planned. Utilize light sensor or time of day to cause it to startup in the appropriate mode for the time/light of day.

Please re add the feature for automatic switching between dark and light mode, this feature is not present anymore in this latest update... It was good to have it automatic for different ambient light conditions

I want Auto to match OS Light / Dark mode (In booth iOS and CarPlay independent).

Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
Select Dark to turn on Dark Mode.

The day/night mode gets switched automatically as I run the application. Unfortunately, it stays that way during the whole drive. I usually travel 3-3.5 hours, starting in the very early morning or early afternoon, therefore I can see the day/night mode does not get re-evaluated during the drive. I have to turn the app off and restart it to switch to the corresponding mode.
