Use Personal Voice on iOS devices
For Apple device users, it would be a significant improvement if Waze offered the option to use Apple’s built-in Personal Voice feature instead of requiring users to manually record navigation prompts within the app.
Apple already provides a system-level Personal Voice feature on iOS that allows users to create and store a synthesized version of their voice directly on their device. Since this voice is generated and managed at the operating system level, many users may have already completed this setup for accessibility or personal use.
By integrating with Apple’s existing speech technologies—such as AVSpeechSynthesizer and related AVFAudio tools—Waze could allow users to seamlessly select their Personal Voice for navigation guidance. Apple has also provided developer resources and WWDC sessions outlining how to implement these capabilities efficiently within third-party apps.
This integration would provide several benefits:
Eliminates duplicate effort – Users who have already created a Personal Voice wouldn’t need to re-record navigation phrases.
Improves accessibility – Especially valuable for users who rely on Personal Voice for speech accessibility.
Creates a more seamless iOS experience – Leveraging native system features enhances consistency and user satisfaction.
Reduces friction during setup – Faster onboarding for personalized navigation voices.
Rather than reinventing a parallel recording system, Waze could leverage functionality that is already securely and efficiently built into iOS devices.
This would be a thoughtful enhancement for Apple users and a strong step toward deeper platform integration.
