Independent Map Views / Zoom Levels for Center Display and Driver Display on Android Automotive
On vehicles with Android Automotive / Google built-in, such as the Volvo XC90, Waze can display navigation on both the center infotainment screen and the driver/instrument display.
Currently, however, both displays essentially show the same navigation perspective and zoom behavior. This makes poor use of having two separate displays.
Google Maps already handles this much better on the same vehicle and hardware:
- Driver Display: Close, dynamic turn-by-turn view with automatic zoom for junctions and upcoming maneuvers.
- Center Display: Wider map view or complete route overview, allowing the driver to see the overall journey and traffic situation.
I would like Waze to offer the same functionality.
Requested feature
Please allow independent map views and zoom levels for multiple displays on Android Automotive:
Driver / Instrument Display
- Dynamic auto-zoom
- Detailed turn-by-turn navigation
- Close view for upcoming junctions and maneuvers
Center Infotainment Display
- Wider map view or full-route overview
- Independently adjustable zoom level
- Option to keep the selected zoom level or route overview during navigation
Changing or automatically adjusting the map view on the driver display should not reset or change the map view on the center display, and vice versa.
This is not a hardware limitation: Google Maps already provides separate and useful views on the two displays in the same Volvo XC90.
Implementing independent display views would make much better use of the multi-display capabilities of Android Automotive and would benefit Volvo XC90, XC60, EX90 and other vehicles using Google built-in / Android Automotive.
