Hi everyone. How many people speak Catalan?
Catalan is spoken in a very diverse linguistic territory. Within the Catalan-speaking regions of Spain, France, and Italy, it is spoken by more than 9.1 million people, of whom around 8.8 million live in Spain.
Of these 9.1 million people, more speak it as a second language than as a native language: 4 million speak it as their mother tongue, while 5 million speak it as a second language.
Outside of Spain, there are approximately 131,000 speakers living in France, 30,000 in Andorra, and 40,000 in Alghero.
In Andorra, Catalan is the only official language, so wouldn't it be great if we could have our own language with an automated text-to-speech (TTS) voice?

El català es parla a un territori lingüístic molt variat. Dins de les regions de parla catalana d'Espanya, França i Itàlia, en parlen més de 9,1 milions de persones, de les quals prop de 8,8 milions viuen a Espanya.
D'aquests 9,1 milions de persones, són més les que el parlen com a segon idioma que com a idioma nadiu: 4 milions el parlen com a llengua materna, mentre que 5 milions el parlen com a segona llengua.
Fora d'Espanya hi ha aproximadament 131.000 parlants que viuen a França, 30.000 a Andorra i 40.000 a Alguer.
Al País d'Andorra el Català és l'únic idioma oficial i, per tant, no seria de bon grat que aconseguíssim tenir el nostre propi idioma amb una veu automatitzada de conversió de text a veu (TTS)?

I believe that being able to use Waze in Catalan is a matter of normality and respect for linguistic diversity. For those of us who regularly speak Catalan, having the directions and interface available in our language makes the app easier to use and helps keep Catalan alive in the technological sphere. Including Catalan does not take anything away from any other language; it simply gives each user the freedom to use the language they prefer.

It's a suggestion we should have made a long time ago. It would be fantastic to hear Penelope speaking Catalan or Aina from Catalonia giving us directions on Waze. Cheers.

Catalan is part of our daily lives, and being able to receive navigation instructions in our own language would make the app feel much more natural. Thank you for considering it!

There are many of us who speak Catalan, and it would be nice to be able to drive with Waze in our language. It's a shame to have to use a language different from the one we normally use in our daily lives. Thank you.
