Permanently Map Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Cameras Using DeFlock Data
Feature Request — Permanently Map Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Cameras Using DeFlock Data
I would like to request that your navigation platform add Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, including Flock Safety cameras and similar roadside surveillance systems, as a permanent map feature.
Currently, navigation applications display permanent infrastructure such as traffic signals, speed cameras, and red-light cameras, but generally do not distinguish ALPR surveillance cameras as their own category.
These cameras are increasingly common along public roads, and I believe drivers should have the ability to see where they are located.
Proposed functionality:
- Add ALPR cameras as a dedicated permanent camera category, distinct from speed and red-light enforcement cameras.
- Display camera locations and, where available, the direction of surveillance.
- Allow users to enable or disable ALPR camera visibility and approaching-camera notifications.
- Support verified additions, removals, and corrections to the camera database.
- Explore integrating existing camera location data from DeFlock (https://maps.deflock.org/) and its underlying OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Investigate an automated data integration that periodically synchronizes camera locations as the database changes.
I currently report cameras manually through Waze, but individual reports are not a practical or scalable way to document the large number of permanent ALPR installations.
The DeFlock project already maintains a substantial crowdsourced database, making it a promising starting point for a more comprehensive solution.
This feature would improve transparency about roadside surveillance infrastructure and allow drivers to make more informed decisions about their travel.
I am requesting that ALPR cameras be treated as their own infrastructure category rather than incorrectly classified as police activity, speed cameras, or red-light cameras.
Thank you for considering this feature and a potential integration with the DeFlock project.
