I see your point for an a much earlier warning because anything shorter than a quarter mile would probably be ineffective, especially if traffic is very light.

As a police officer, I can tell you that we never spot someone 1-2 miles out. The radar's signal may travel that far but we cannot see that far. Radar is a tool to confirm my suspicion that someone is speeding. It is not my only source of detecting your speed. After running radar for many years I can guess within 2MPH how fast you are traveling, so if I am running radar in a 45MPH zone and I estimate your speed at 58MPH, I use my radar to confirm you speed, not to tell me you are speeding. If my estimation is more than 2MPH off your actual speed, I would disregard you and recalibrate the radar unit.

In order to graduate from the radar instruction course I took, I had to estimate the speed of 10 cars while I was moving and 10 cars while I was stationary. If I estimated the vehicle's speed by more than +/- 2MPH more than 3 tries on the 20 vehicles, I would have failed the course.

This feature of alerting to the presence of police, for speeding purposes, does not bother me. It causes people slow down and that save lives. I will catch plenty of people speeding regardless of WAZE, radar detectors, etc. But in lieu of current events and hostility towards law enforcement, this portion of the app does bother me. Officers may eventually be targeted using these types of apps if the anti-police trend continues.

It would be nice to have an immediate audible warning of an accident ahead much sooner than the current warning. I believe I receive the warning about a 1/2 mile before the accident. By that time I am stuck in the traffic jam and it's too late. If the audible alert was provided immediately, upon choosing a route, I would choose an alternate route at the beginning of my trip. I know there is an icon for accidents when choosing multiple routes but sometimes I am already driving when I start the app and cannot focus my attention to looking for an accident icon. I would be nice if the audible alert would say something like, "Accident reported 5.8 miles on your current route, on Interstate 35. Would you like to choose an alternate route?"
