As deeggo stated, automation is key. Anything that will make waze require less babysitting will add greatly to it's usability. Detecting if your car is on or off (based on a charger/dock charging the phone only when the car is on) would help in that department. Now that the pause option is getting more traction you might also want to vote on this: http://waze.uservoice.com/forums/59223-client-how-can-we-improve-waze-on-your-phone-/suggestions/998821-detect-car-on-off-state?ref=title

Most car docks/chargers charge only when the car engine is running. I propose making an option (default off) that pauses waze when the engine is turned off (charging stopped). This would allow you to leave waze running during a (gas)stop.

Note: First there has to be a pause mode first, but that idea seems to get plenty of votes here.

this will not solve the issue with these screens, as waze has its own bar (right below the notifications bar) which will not be removed. So we need to think of a better solution that will prevent the burn-in, but hiding the notifications bar will not help.

It's already possible to hide waze's own bar & controls, hiding the android bar too would give more screen estate regardless of what it does or doesn't do for burn-in.

On android phones maps keeps some services like lattitude running in the background. Also, Lattitude has some delay built-in in everything but alerts.

This is somewhat of a non-issue for Android users.

Using waze while walking contributes bad data. The bad usability on your phone is twofold: Battery capacity and gps/3g/gprs chip power usage. If you have a phone with a lower battery capacity and a power hungry radio you can bet using it all drains your battery quickly. Also, wrongly using your battery can drastically decrease it's capacity. This cannot be solved in software, as it is a hardware issue inherent in your phone.

The fact that your phone gets hot is a obvious sign your battery gets drained fast or your chip is working at peak capacity.

Most waze users use either a more powerful phone which has a better battery, or use a car dock with charger.

Bulldozer has been removed from the main screen in the Netherlands. If your country is basemapped (or just mostly mapped) contact waze to get it off the main screen.

Waze is always in learn mode, that's the beauty of it. Just drive the route a few times and waze will figure it out. If any of the routes is obstructed or impossible you should edit the map to reflect that.

Very nice, but do you have a ford for waze to test this on? There are also other bluetooth options available to read data off a car's CAN network

Tried tapping the green bar? it gives a "stop navigating" option on android. Not very obvious, but found it by accident.

    Somewhat like http://waze.uservoice.com/forums/59223-client-how-can-we-improve-waze-on-your-phone-/suggestions/960891-download-maps?ref=title

What would work for both is this: A (lot) bigger cache (on SD, user configurable) and the option to preload a country/state/province. If waze has a data connection it can always update pieces of the map on the go.
