Increase police warning distance

Waze users are warned of speed traps or police presence only about 600 feet ahead of time. This is far too late of a warning. With a clear line of sight, law enforcement can detect speeders at 1-2 miles out.

By the time the Waze warning pops up, you could have already been detected.

This feature – while very well intentioned and thought out – is useless with so little warning.

I don't agree with this idea. The app should not be used to help people break the law. People who speed are a threat to public safety and should be caught and heavily fined IMO. If they are a repeat offender suspend their license and tow away their vehicle. Give them a choice to walk home or take a ride in the backseat of a police cruiser, where they get to enjoy a free ride to their nice new prison cell.

The only problem I have with this suggestion is that we can't be sure where the report marker has been positioned.

If it's at the point where the police are actually located then the current warning distance is definitely too low, but if it's at the point where an alert Wazer has first spotted the police off in the distance (i.e. at the point where the police will also then first be able to spot you approaching them), then the current warning distance is plenty sufficient and extending it might be counter-productive. Warning drivers too soon of a hazard is almost as bad as warning them too late - you want the warning to still be fresh in their minds as they approach the point on the road where they need to be aware of it...

As others have pointed out here, even if we could be sure that the alert was always generated at the appropriate time/distance, the way the app currently behaves when you've got several reports in close proximity doesn't help either - so as well as the popup alert system we have now, it might be nice to have a permanently visible "distance to next report of type X" readout somewhere that we could configure based on which report type we were most interested in knowing about.

I hope that a drunk driver at 190 km / h crashes with you after having avoided a police control. Amen!!!!

Espero que un conductor borracho y a 190 km/h se estrelle contigo después de haber evitado un control de la policía. Amen!!!!

The condition of holding a licence is compliance with the laws of the road.

Grow up and accept that if you speed there could be consequences, nobodys an angel, but stop whining if you choose to break the rules and think you shouldnt get caught. Everybody knows that usually the checks are for the worst offenders so eg 10% over the posted limit + 2 in the uk is a low risk, but if youre a scumbag tailgating undertaking audi doing 100 in a 60 or 70 zone you deserve to be nicked the hard way.

This is in line with comments I have read in other places. The ability to set the "Events Radius" with both on "On route only" and a distance would be perfect.

    Good! Give them all tickets!

It would be better to have an alert area instead of along a segment. Often on a freeway the troopers are running in both directions. and if you are going in the opposite direction of the report you will not get an alert. Police should be reported as a zone not a point.

I agree and think the alert distance should be customizable; police alerts could be set to 1/4 mile - 3 miles before police location. And please allow me to turn off hazard warnings and keep police warnings on!

And to all you commenters saying "don't speed", "we want to get home safe too, blah blah blah": don't forget, this app gained most of its popularity for the feature of police reporting. I speed on every highway I travel; without police reports I wouldn't even use the app. So get off your high horses, stay in the right lane and let the non-zombie drivers drive. I save dozens of hours of time spent in the car every year because I speed; just because you can't drive safely at 70mph in a 55, doesn't mean I can't.

The way I see it, the alert is there so that people know there may be an officer on the side of the road, and to keep alert in order to avoid a wreck.

Nobody owes you data on speed traps. Caveat emptor, driver.
