Even just a north symbol on the display map to tell me which way the map is oriented would work. When you leave a destination and don't know if you're about to travel in the correct direction until it's too late, it is frustrating. If I see that the map is upside down from where it's supposed to be, I know to go left instead of right, etc.

When leaving a parking lot, often Waze tells you to travel on a road, but frequently the orientation is flipped 180 degrees, so I begin going in the wrong direction. If the map had at least an indication of what it thinks north is, I would better know which way to travel when I begin.

Many people are RED color blind. Make the directional pointer BLACK. Make compass bigger.

May be it will help you but you can use option Settings - Display & map - Always show map controls. There will be a small compass in the map after turning on that option.

speedometer is great check against inaccurate one in car and now displays the posted speed so you dont have to look for signs

Please use compass data to calculate orientation upon app startup. I'm tired of having routes calculated facing wrong direction....

why wouldn't there be a simple compass on screen? I don't need to know how fast i'm going!?

I like the new Waze, but why on earth is there still no option for having a compass on screen at all times? Who needs a speedometer on screen? My car already has one of those built in!

Getting directly to the point;
IMHO Besides the true north their is no alternative for someone that doesn't want to use the true north, I think it would be beneficial and a practical feature to display a '8 point compass letters' reading. (i.e. intercardinal directions; northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). by displaying the 2 letters on the top right of the screen.

To keep the display clean they could just put the letters inside the compass icon. So no additional screen area is used up.

Small direction of travel indicator on display

It appears that Waze doesn't read the iPhone's compass (relying instead on a GPS vector to guess the user's heading). This negatively affects the user experience because Waze doesn't know what direction to tell you to go in at the beginning of a trip and often guesses badly, and doesn't realize that the user has turned for a second or so (until they've moved sufficiently along the new road for it to register in the GPS position delta).

Let's get a little more sophisticated and use the available hardware...
