New Driver / Learner Mode - For drivers that have restrictions for speed / highway
A mode for new driver/learner, where restrictions (typically not allowed on major highways, or speeds above 100kph. When this mode is on the route provided avoids these. Much like avoid Toll.

@DeviateFromThePlan even if it isn't used for Restricted Licence Classes, people who do not wish to do the posted speed limit- say older individuals using the app can drive at a slower speed they are comfortable at etc with it showing the estimated time of arrival etc.

It won't be as effective in states like Qld where leaners and P platers can do the posted SL, but for NSW I can see it would be a plus.

In countries like Australia, where Learner or P-Plate drivers are restricted to speed limits such as 90km/h or 100km/h regardless of the posted speed, having the option in apps (like Waze) to set a custom speed limit for their driving profile would be incredibly useful.
This feature could allow users to input their maximum allowable or planned driving speed, which the app could then use to calculate more accurate estimated times of arrival (ETAs) for trips. It could also help improve route recommendations by prioritising paths that are more suited to their speed restrictions (e.g., avoiding motorways if the speed difference significantly affects traffic flow).
Additionally, the feature could provide warnings or reminders if the driver exceeds their customised speed limit, helping ensure compliance and enhancing safety. This option would be particularly beneficial for novice drivers, those with temporary restrictions, or individuals driving vehicles with specific speed limitations, such as heavy or older vehicles.

Idea: Add a “New Driver” option to Waze, specifically adapted to France’s probationary license rules, which would automatically adjust the app’s features to meet the unique speed restrictions and needs of new drivers in France.
- Adjusted Speed Limits and Probationary Driver Profile: When a user registers as a probationary driver under France’s licensing rules, Waze could display adapted speed limits (e.g., 80 km/h instead of 90 km/h on standard roads, 100 km/h instead of 110 km/h on expressways). This would provide a constant visual reminder of the specific speed restrictions for new drivers, helping them avoid unintentional speeding. Once the probationary period ends (three years, or two years with supervised driving), Waze could automatically update the driver’s profile to standard speed limits.
- Safer Route Options: Provide “easier” and less complex route options specifically for new drivers, avoiding high-traffic roads, challenging intersections, or accident-prone areas. This type of route would prioritize safety and simplicity, allowing probationary drivers to travel more confidently, even on longer journeys or in unfamiliar areas.

New drivers are often imposed lower speed limits. The application should help by having the date and country of the driver licence as parameter to compute the new driver period during which these reduced speed limits apply (note that eg in France the new driver period can be reduced to 2 years from 3 by attending a stage during the period so this must also be parameterised).
Then these reduced speed limits must be used for planification and while driving. -

Also details like check interior mirrors signal right/left .... Keep left ... Choose the outer lane etc. just like how an instructor would teach it would be a learning tool

Where learners can't use certain roads, the routes are not helpful. New drivers would benefit as would people who aren't in a hurry that want to avoid motorways.

This would be useful for heavy vehicle drivers or speed restricted vehicles too.

Bonjour Waze,
Pourrait-il y avoir une option « apprenti conducteur » sur votre application ? Elle permettrait d’avoir un temps estimé plus juste sur les itinéraires où les automobilistes débutants doivent rouler à 110km au lieu de 130 sur autoroute.
Merci ! -

I was thinking mabye an option to select if you are provisional driver and have a set speed limit to see a more acurate depiction of your eta

New drivers have different speed restrictions for 2 years. Having new driver mode would show the correct allowed speed for the driver not to get confused and in this way he would receive correct alerts for speeding (because if for example where everyone is allowed to go 90km/h new driver is allowed to go 80 km/h and if he goes 90 km/h he won’t receive alert for exceeding the speed limit. Also, in this way the arrival time would be calculated correctly. It’s quite frustrating when you set the destination you see one arrival time and then the time just gets longer and longer while you drive.

P plater mode (drivers with restricted speed limits). This mode would calculate arrival times based on the drivers speed restrictions. It would also suggest a faster route based on the restrictions of the driver.

Note that this would get high usage from teens and if you lock them into using Waze when they are first driving, that's a whole new captive set of users.

In some states (like NY), you are not allowed to drive on certain roads or bridges with a driver's permit. For example, there are several parkways and most of the bridges and tunnels in/out of NYC except the GWB and Lincoln Tunnel. And in NYC, you cannot drive on roads in a park. It would be great if there was an option to select navigation that avoided these particular restricted roads.

This is probably specific to just some countries but anyway it would be a useful feature to have: in some countries, for the firsts years after you get your license, you have some extra restrictions to some laws. For example your highway speed limit might be reduced (For example in Itali it is 100Km/h instead of 130Km/h for the firsts 3 years with a license). It would be really nice if the app let you select an option so that it takes that in account when giving indications on speed limit ecc.
