Use compass to know direction facing
Use built in compass to work out which way car is facing when calculating best route answer -preferably during the route too.
So for example, if I'm facing west when I enter my route, waze should not suggest driving east down the road to begin with. It should either recommend west or a u-turn followed by east.
Thank you for this suggestion.
Setting the car’s direction when starting the app and navigation is a known matter which will be addressed in the future.
There are many complexities in location tracking which cause this issue and hold us from providing a solution.
It’s currently on the back burner, but definitely a part of the backlog.

Put direction you are headed on the map screen

Even just a north symbol on the display map to tell me which way the map is oriented would work. When you leave a destination and don't know if you're about to travel in the correct direction until it's too late, it is frustrating. If I see that the map is upside down from where it's supposed to be, I know to go left instead of right, etc.

It appears that Waze doesn't read the iPhone's compass (relying instead on a GPS vector to guess the user's heading). This negatively affects the user experience because Waze doesn't know what direction to tell you to go in at the beginning of a trip and often guesses badly, and doesn't realize that the user has turned for a second or so (until they've moved sufficiently along the new road for it to register in the GPS position delta).
Let's get a little more sophisticated and use the available hardware...
