An error occurred while saving the comment Aurélien BLONDEL commentedCame here to suggest this as well. If you don't pick the main itinerary and you're taking the wrong turn, Waze will automatically route you back to the main itinerary. This is VERY frustrating, to say the least.

Thanks for your feedback. At this time, this doesn't fit on our roadmap, but we'll keep it in mind for future product planning.

Hey,
Please note we're changing the status of this suggestion to Currently Not Planned, since we finalized our plans for 2024 and this idea won't be implemented this year.
We hope to include it in our plans for later down the line.
Thanks!

Given how many users Waze serves, this should definitely be the next feature to get implemented. This would be an option to tick within Options > Navigation. In order to promote the idea, when unticked, Waze should propose both the fastest and the most fuel-efficient routes, for the user to choose from.
@TheMet4lGod: I am reasonably sure it would be quite simple actually. Intuitively, a mix of shortest route / shortest total acceleration time / lowest average speed, with adequate coefficients and maybe some other criterions I cannot think of at the moment, should do the trick?
As for that "turn right" episode of Mythbusters (thanks for raising that point, I did not knew at all), the 2 top answers on that Reddit thread do explain it quite well: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/rmwih/can_you_help_explain_this_mythbusters_result/
